Saxony XL review: useful features and important limits
The Saxony XL is worth considering for a dedicated outdoor cooking area when your appliance instructions permit the proposed location. This review uses manufacturer documents; it does not claim a hands-on Saxony assembly or cooking test.
What the documented package includes
The Saxony XL product listing describes cedar framing, a galvanized steel roof, two integrated metal counters and a PowerPort accessory. Check the exact model number and package contents against the retailer listing before buying.
What works well on paper
- The supplied counters give prep and serving equipment a defined place.
- The elongated roof can suit a cooking station better than a square dining layout.
- Pre-cut and pre-drilled components reduce fabrication work, although assembly and anchoring still need planning.
What the product name does not establish
A grill gazebo is not automatically compatible with every grill. Cedar framing is combustible, and some appliance manuals prohibit overhead combustible construction. The metal roof and open sides do not cancel those restrictions. Do not treat a product photo as approval for your equipment.
Check fit before comparing sizes
Use the XL assembly drawings to mark the posts and counters on the ground. Add open lids, doors, shelves and every clearance required by your appliance. Compare a smaller Saxony only with its own drawings, rather than assuming proportional inside dimensions.

Watch a Real Backyard Discovery Gazebo Build in 4K
Before you commit to a gazebo, it helps to see one go together in the real world. Preston and his brother built a Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′ cedar gazebo in a single evening, start to finish.
In the 4K video below, you can see how the pre-cut, pre-drilled cedar pieces fit together, how the hardware is organized, and how manageable the process is for just two people. The fresh cedar smell, solid posts, and overall build quality are a big part of why we like Backyard Discovery so much.
If you want to see more photos and details from this exact build, Preston also wrote about the process on his personal site: PrestonShamblen.com/backyard-discovery-arcadia-gazebo-setup. It includes tips, notes, and behind-the-scenes details from the same evening.
Buying decision
Shortlist the XL if the measured layout, foundation and appliance requirements all work. Budget for site preparation, anchoring, help with assembly and ongoing finish care. Choose another arrangement if the plan depends on enclosing the sides, squeezing clearances or hanging heavy additions from the frame.
