Choose a smoker or grill location before choosing its gazebo
A shelter must fit the appliance’s installation rules as well as its physical dimensions. Smokers, griddles, charcoal grills and gas grills can have different restrictions; there is no universal “gazebo-safe” category.
Check covered-use restrictions first
Read the exact manual for overhead construction and distances from combustible materials. Cedar remains combustible beneath a metal roof. Some manufacturers prohibit operation below combustible construction, as illustrated by Weber’s outdoor-use guidance.
Measure the complete appliance
- Include an open lid, side shelves, firebox and chimney where fitted.
- Allow access to fuel, ash, grease collection and service panels.
- Map every required clearance rather than just the wheel footprint.
- Repeat the check separately for a second cooker.
Where Saxony XL belongs in the comparison
The Saxony XL manual provides the actual support and counter layout. Compare those drawings with the equipment plan before deciding whether the combination works. A photo with several appliances does not verify your models.
Keep combustion in a suitable open-air location
The CPSC charcoal guide explains that charcoal can emit carbon monoxide and must be used outdoors in open air. Do not add enclosure panels to solve weather exposure while a grill or smoker is operating.

Watch a Real Backyard Discovery Gazebo Build in 4K
Before you commit to a gazebo, it helps to see one go together in the real world. Preston and his brother built a Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′ cedar gazebo in a single evening, start to finish.
In the 4K video below, you can see how the pre-cut, pre-drilled cedar pieces fit together, how the hardware is organized, and how manageable the process is for just two people. The fresh cedar smell, solid posts, and overall build quality are a big part of why we like Backyard Discovery so much.
If you want to see more photos and details from this exact build, Preston also wrote about the process on his personal site: PrestonShamblen.com/backyard-discovery-arcadia-gazebo-setup. It includes tips, notes, and behind-the-scenes details from the same evening.
Foundation and installation
A noncombustible cooking surface and a structurally adequate gazebo foundation are separate checks. Follow the gazebo’s attachment plan; loose gravel or decorative pavers alone do not prove adequate anchoring. Plan assembly from the exact manual and keep the appliance outside the shelter when its rules require it.
