Start an outdoor-kitchen plan with the appliances and how people will move around them. A roof and counters can be useful, but they do not establish that every grill, sink or cabinet layout is compatible.
Set the appliance constraints
Read each appliance manual for covered-use restrictions and required distances from combustible construction. Mark the full operating footprint with lids, doors and shelves open. Keep guest seating and through-traffic out of the cooking work area.
