Can you put a gazebo on grass, dirt or pavers?
A permanent cedar gazebo can stand over a lawn or paved patio, but the ground covering alone does not establish a safe foundation. For the Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′, do not set the posts on grass, loose soil or a gravel pad and assume ordinary ground stakes will do the rest.
The Arcadia manual specifies square, level footings, a concrete pad or a supported deck. Its supplied mounting arrangement is for wood or concrete. It does not establish generic soil anchors or loose paving blocks as interchangeable alternatives.
What each surface means for the project
- Grass: You may retain grass around a properly designed foundation. Plan how you will maintain the area and keep post bases accessible, rather than treating turf as structural support.
- Dirt: A cleared patch is only the beginning of site preparation. Ask a qualified installer to assess drainage, ground conditions and the foundation required before the kit arrives.
- Pavers: Identify what is beneath them. A patio laid on bedding material is different from paving over a structural slab. Do not assume drilling through a paver into a loose block creates adequate anchorage.
Questions to settle before building
Give the installer the exact model manual and ask where each post will be supported, what the anchors connect to and whether the existing patio must be altered. Resolve finished heights and water management at the same time. Have any required permissions and utility checks completed before excavation.
Ground screws, helical piles or other alternative systems need project-specific assessment and manufacturer guidance; this article cannot prescribe them by climate or gazebo size. Backyard Discovery’s safety and warranty booklet excludes improper installation on uneven, unlevel or soft ground. A well-presented surface is not evidence that the installation meets the gazebo’s requirements.

Watch a Real Backyard Discovery Gazebo Build in 4K
Before you commit to a gazebo, it helps to see one go together in the real world. Preston and his brother built a Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′ cedar gazebo in a single evening, start to finish.
In the 4K video below, you can see how the pre-cut, pre-drilled cedar pieces fit together, how the hardware is organized, and how manageable the process is for just two people. The fresh cedar smell, solid posts, and overall build quality are a big part of why we like Backyard Discovery so much.
If you want to see more photos and details from this exact build, Preston also wrote about the process on his personal site: PrestonShamblen.com/backyard-discovery-arcadia-gazebo-setup. It includes tips, notes, and behind-the-scenes details from the same evening.
The surface is only part of the answer
You do not necessarily need to pave the entire area beneath a gazebo. You do need a suitable foundation and anchoring arrangement at the posts. Decide those details before choosing grass, gravel or paving as the surrounding finish. The Arcadia build shown here illustrates one assembly, rather than approval of every possible yard surface.
