Saxony XL outdoor kitchen review: where it fits and where it does not
The Saxony XL is a candidate for a focused cooking station rather than a complete outdoor room. Whether it is the best choice depends on the actual appliances, support surface and amount of working space you need.
Strengths to consider
The current product description lists a cedar frame, steel roof and integrated counters. These are useful fixed features if their layout matches your workflow. Open sides also preserve access, but they cannot guarantee that smoke will travel away from people in every wind condition.
Limits to put on the plan
- Roof coverage does not create an enclosed weatherproof kitchen.
- The space between posts and counters is smaller than the advertised roof envelope.
- Extra cabinets, heaters, hoods or heavy countertops are not automatically approved attachments.
- Covered grill use depends on the appliance instructions, not the shelter’s marketing name.
Check materials and clearances honestly
A sealed or treated wood deck remains combustible. A mat or sheet-metal panel is not general permission to reduce grill clearances. For example, Weber’s outdoor-use guidance restricts use beneath overhead combustible construction. Read the instructions for your own exact grill before choosing a location.
Installation is part of the purchase
The Saxony XL manual requires a suitable square, level support and its specified anchoring arrangement. Inspect the site before delivery and budget for preparation and assembly assistance. A different-model video cannot establish this kit’s completion time.

Watch a Real Backyard Discovery Gazebo Build in 4K
Before you commit to a gazebo, it helps to see one go together in the real world. Preston and his brother built a Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′ cedar gazebo in a single evening, start to finish.
In the 4K video below, you can see how the pre-cut, pre-drilled cedar pieces fit together, how the hardware is organized, and how manageable the process is for just two people. The fresh cedar smell, solid posts, and overall build quality are a big part of why we like Backyard Discovery so much.
If you want to see more photos and details from this exact build, Preston also wrote about the process on his personal site: PrestonShamblen.com/backyard-discovery-arcadia-gazebo-setup. It includes tips, notes, and behind-the-scenes details from the same evening.
When it is a reasonable shortlist choice
Consider the XL when the approved appliance layout fits without structural changes or obstructed access. A larger pavilion or a separate uncovered cooking area may be a better answer when the plan needs more room or the grill manual rules out the covered location.
