Saxony layout ideas: draw the working space, not just the roof
A good outdoor kitchen plan leaves space to use the equipment, serve food and reach connections. Begin with the Saxony XL’s posts and counters, then test a few simple arrangements around them.
Option 1: cooking area with a separate serving cart
If covered use is permitted for your appliance, place it only where its full clearances fit. Keep serving furniture outside that zone. This separates guests from the hot work area without attaching new cabinetry to the gazebo.
Option 2: prep shelter beside an open-air cooking area
If the grill manual rules out overhead construction, plan the cooking location outside the roof and use the shelter for prep or serving. Preserve the appliance’s required separation from the gazebo and nearby structures.
Option 3: a simple supplied-counter arrangement
The XL package includes two side counters. Assign one to clean plates and serving, and keep raw-food preparation separate. Test access with a tray in hand before adding an island or refrigerator.
Validate each option
- Use the assembly drawings for actual component positions.
- Show every open door, lid and pull-out compartment.
- Keep an unobstructed route out of the cooking area.
- Confirm access to utilities and maintenance points.
- Have permanent services and any added structural loads assessed separately.
There is no universal aisle width or generic clearance number that proves every backyard layout is suitable. Use the equipment requirements and the people who will use the space to assess the plan.

Watch a Real Backyard Discovery Gazebo Build in 4K
Before you commit to a gazebo, it helps to see one go together in the real world. Preston and his brother built a Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′ cedar gazebo in a single evening, start to finish.
In the 4K video below, you can see how the pre-cut, pre-drilled cedar pieces fit together, how the hardware is organized, and how manageable the process is for just two people. The fresh cedar smell, solid posts, and overall build quality are a big part of why we like Backyard Discovery so much.
If you want to see more photos and details from this exact build, Preston also wrote about the process on his personal site: PrestonShamblen.com/backyard-discovery-arcadia-gazebo-setup. It includes tips, notes, and behind-the-scenes details from the same evening.
Keep the first version simple
Try the layout with movable furniture before commissioning cabinetry. Avoid a design that depends on unapproved post attachments, roof-mounted heaters or enclosing a combustion appliance. A simpler arrangement often preserves better access for cleaning and future equipment changes.
