Choose a gazebo for high winds by documentation and site suitability
The right gazebo for a windy site is one whose documented design and approved installation meet that site’s needs. Roof shape, post thickness and extra straps alone do not prove wind resistance.
Read the model-specific claim
The Barrington 12×12 product page states tested performance in winds up to 100 mph when anchored as specified. Do not interpret that as a guarantee for every gust, foundation, modification or local requirement.
Assess the location and support
Review exposure, the foundation and the anchoring plan with a qualified installer or design professional where needed. Fences and landscaping do not create a predictable wind-protection system. Use the current manual for the intended attachment, rather than assuming ground spikes or generic ground screws are approved.
Keep the assembly as specified
- Use the correct components and fasteners for each step.
- Resolve damaged parts and misalignment before use.
- Do not substitute hurricane straps, braces or larger anchors without approval.
- Check proposed screens, curtains and other additions separately.
Inspect instead of relying on appearance
Look for movement at supports, connection gaps, coating damage and deteriorated wood. A large post can still be part of a damaged installation. Have structural concerns assessed before using the gazebo again.

Watch a Real Backyard Discovery Gazebo Build in 4K
Before you commit to a gazebo, it helps to see one go together in the real world. Preston and his brother built a Backyard Discovery Arcadia 12′ x 9.5′ cedar gazebo in a single evening, start to finish.
In the 4K video below, you can see how the pre-cut, pre-drilled cedar pieces fit together, how the hardware is organized, and how manageable the process is for just two people. The fresh cedar smell, solid posts, and overall build quality are a big part of why we like Backyard Discovery so much.
If you want to see more photos and details from this exact build, Preston also wrote about the process on his personal site: PrestonShamblen.com/backyard-discovery-arcadia-gazebo-setup. It includes tips, notes, and behind-the-scenes details from the same evening.
Plan for dangerous weather
Wind ratings are not a reason to remain outdoors during a storm. Follow warnings, and use National Weather Service guidance to plan safe shelter when thunderstorms threaten. Assemble and secure the property while conditions are safe.
